What first attracted you to a career in law?
My first degree was in French and Business Studies and I worked abroad for several years. On returning to the UK, I became a bursar in a state school. I found that in all the work I did, I had to acquire knowledge of various aspects of the law which I found fascinating. I decided to change careers and qualified as a solicitor in 2005.
What type of legal advice do you provide and to what type of clients?
I qualified as a commercial property lawyer but I often acted for commercial clients in their private property transactions. I found dealing with residential property to be a very interesting, varied and often demanding area of law, which I enjoyed. Therefore, I decided to specialise in this field and bring a commercial approach to transactions. I act for all types of clients from first time buyers to high-net-worth individuals and investors.
What is your most memorable legal experience and why?
I was instructed to act in the sale of a multi-million-pound, listed country house and estate in the hills overlooking Cheltenham. There were many complex title issues to overcome to satisfy the buyer’s London lawyers. I worked tirelessly to get to exchange of contracts before the Christmas break and took the contract to my clients for signature at the property in the driving wind and rain on the evening of 23 December. The house was beautifully decorated for Christmas and the clients and I sat at the large kitchen table in the impressive kitchen whilst I called the buyer’s lawyer to exchange contracts. We then celebrated with a glass of fizz.
This transaction was memorable because I was dealing with one of the best houses in Cheltenham, I sorted out complex issues to progress the sale and provided an excellent bespoke service for my clients.
What is your number one tip for clients?
Residential property transactions can be a stressful experience for clients for various reasons. A good property lawyer is there to guide clients through the process and help alleviate that stress. My number one tip for clients is to choose your property lawyer carefully and select one that will take the time to understand your unique circumstances and proactively deal with your transaction.
