Broader, stronger private client expertise

A private client solicitors team which rivals any in the UK in terms of size and range of expertise has been formed by the merger of Harrison Clark Rickerbys and Hewitsons.

The private client team is headed by Alex Taylor and Daniel Curtis and the services provided by the team include: will drafting, advising on family investment companies, advising older and vulnerable clients, dealing with landed estates, drafting and the administration of trusts, administering estates following someone’s death and providing estate and tax planning advice.

The firm’s expertise is international too, so the team is able to support clients wherever they are.

Alex Taylor said: “The merger between the two firms equips us with one of the biggest private client teams in the country, providing nationwide support for our clients.

“This especially important for those of our clients who are elderly or vulnerable; we are happy to meet them where it suits them, so we can discuss their needs in a place where they feel most comfortable.”

It is not uncommon for staff to be required to draft hospitalised clients’ wills at short notice due to their health condition. Wills of this nature are usually drafted and signed within 24 hours.

The team can advise clients across a wide range of issues, from traditional landed estates through to advice around how to manage crypto-currency assets on death or as part of your lifetime estate planning.

Through the firm’s Wills at Work service, the firm helps employers such as Oracle, Jelf and Ecclesiastical Insurance to remove what some perceive as the stigma around will writing for their staff. The Wills at Work service provides the employee, through their company’s benefit portal, with the option to draft their will through the service, ensuring that they have the option to plan for the future.

Spanning both the property and private client teams, the addition of the agriculture team from Hewitsons also brings additional expertise to the firm, with its experience in advising high net worth individuals and land owners.

Many team members hold the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners qualification and are part of the Solicitors for the Elderly network. They act for a number of private family charitable trusts, an area that is constantly growing.

Alex added: “We are happy to help people whatever their needs. Whether they have a small estate with no inheritance tax implications or a multimillion-pound estate with complex requirements, we can make sure our clients’ wishes are fulfilled.”

The merger has also benefited staff, with the new expertise in the team giving team members a broader outlook – new recruits are also welcome, especially in the Thames Valley, Cheltenham and Herefordshire offices.
