A former senior Royal Air Force executive and pilot, his career included 3 tours flying fighters in the Air Defence role and 4 years as a flying instructor. He has commanded an E-3D AWACS squadron and was Station Commander at RAF Waddington, one of the Service’s largest main operating bases. He has wide operational experience, including duties as the Air Component Commander for all UK flying operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also has experience as the lead regulator for UK military aviation and its associated policy development.
His last formal military appointment was as Deputy Commander for the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force, where he was responsible for strategic and operational direction of this multi-national programme, regulation and oversight of operations, logistics and safety, development of acquisition requirements, and continued airworthiness. Known for his open and collegiate style of leadership and management, he has successfully delivered a number of major programmes to time and budget.
A Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, he was appointed as Chief Executive of the UK Flight Safety Committee in February 2012. He now works with airlines, the Civil Aviation Authority, industry and aviation bodies at home and abroad to improve commercial aviation safety.
