Paula Williamson is a solicitor specialising in Information Law within the Education Team.
She advises clients from all sectors including schools on all aspects of data protection (including GDPR) and freedom of information legislation within a range of contexts such as drafting commercial agreements; outsourcing of data processing; marketing, fundraising, development and wealth profiling; websites; biometrics, drafting data protection and BYOD policies and Terms and Conditions; carrying out data protection audits; responding to breach incidents and assisting data controllers process statutory requests for information. Paula is currently instructed by a number of clients to help them prepare for the UK’s new Data Protection Act / GDPR.
Paula also has extensive experience of advising and training schools on compliance with their legal obligations under the information law regulatory regime. Some of the training she provides to education clients has been developed in consultation with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) which is the body that enforces this legislation.
With her background as a regulatory public prosecutor, Paula is regularly asked to defend clients (including schools) facing enforcement action by the ICO and has successfully defended civil Monetary Penalty Notice proceedings for a large ISP.
An examiner in Information Law, Paula sits on the British Computing Society’s Data Protection and Freedom of Information Panels where she sets and marks examinations in both these subjects; these BCS qualifications are generally regarded as the industry standard for information law practitioners in every sector. Paula is also a regular speaker for the Independent Schools Bursars Association (ISBA).
