Philip is widely recognised as a dynamic and combat proven Flag Officer, Joint Commander and Naval Officer with strategic vision and a track record as a highly experienced military leader and versatile transformation director across extremely complex structures. His extensive experience includes SME Board Chairmanship, leadership, teambuilding, initiating and delivering major change programmes, multi £100M annual budget accountability, risk assessment and rapid decision-making in a global, world-class, blue-chip organisation.

During his naval career, Philip commanded 3 ships, a destroyer squadron, the Royal Navy’s largest training establishment and the Naval Reserves. He fought in the Falklands Campaign and the First Gulf War and was the Crisis Director for UK operations in Sierra Leone and the Indian Ocean Tsunami disaster; he was Deputy Joint Commander for UK operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. His last RN appointment was Chief of Staff in the Navy’s HQ and Head of the Surface Navy. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for leadership in command of HMS GLOUCESTER in Gulf War 1 and became a Companion of the Bath in 2007 for sustained leadership throughout his naval career.

Retiring from the Navy in 2009, Philip is on the Board of 6 SME companies (4 as Chairman) and is heavily engaged in local voluntary organisations in Herefordshire and beyond. In addition, he is an adviser on future strategic context, cumulative risk management and senior leadership with clients that have included a blue chip FTSE250 company and 2 Business Schools. He is an active proponent of UK defence and security issues, is a Freeman of the City of Glasgow and has just been appointed as Deputy Lieutenant for Herefordshire.
