Construction and Engineering

The construction industry and construction projects are by their very nature often complex and that means that those involved require comprehensive but above all commercial legal solutions.

Harrison Clark Rickerbys acts for businesses spread across the whole breadth of the construction and engineering sector from main and sub contractors, suppliers, consultants, funders, developers and employers, in both the private and public sectors.

Our clients range from local authorities and major contractors to owner managed businesses, private developers, and educational institutions. The combination of our depth of experience and our regional base ensures that our service is focused and cost-effective.

“They have the interests of the clients at heart and are always keen to engage with emerging legal issues.”

The construction and engineering team provide commercially astute advice whether the issue relates to procurement, contracts, a defect, non-payment, non-performance, or funding.

Many members of the team previously worked for large international and national law firms and have experience in JCT, NEC, RIBA, ACE, MF/1, FIDIC, BSF and PfS standard form contracts as well as deeds of appointment, assignment, novation and collateral warranties, surety documents (such as Performance Bonds and Parent Company Guarantees), funding options (such as escrow agreements and advance payment bonds) and letters of intent.

Support from the team is involved and detailed, providing practical and cost-effective solutions for clients. The team provides regular updates to the industry in the free quarterly newsletter ‘Spot on for Construction’ and works in unison with Harrison Clark Rickerbys Commercial Property and Procurement teams in providing seminars and briefings throughout the year. We can also assist on the significant regulatory burden associated with building works including HSE investigations, PACE interviews, inquests, defences and remediation programmes and internal investigations.

Andrew James leads a multi-disciplinary team who are actively involved in the construction industry and are supported by a dedicated team of not only lawyers but also quantity surveyors who are all specialists in the field of construction, meaning that Harrison Clark Rickerbys has a huge depth and breadth of experience.

At Harrison Clark Rickerbys, Andrew James creates strong longstanding client relationships with the likes of Lafarge Tarmac, which he has represented for 20 years. The firm acted for Devon County Council, successfully defending it against claims of £2m at the Technology and Construction Court.

Harrison Clark Rickerbys’ construction and engineering team has sector specialism in infrastructure, education, health and energy-to-waste. Lucinda Baker is the key contact.
