This month we introduce Hyein Ma, a Paralegal in the Birmingham office Corporate team. Hyein joined HCR last year, having completed her LLB Law degree at the University of Liverpool, followed by the Legal Practice Course (LPC) with an MSc in Law, Business and Management. Hyein is a valuable member of the team and is mentored by Partner and Head of Midlands Corporate, Alison Scott.
My day begins with a chorus of “morning!”, before I log on, run through my to-do-list for the day, and catch up with any emails I received overnight. My typical day in the Corporate team consists of drafting documents and Companies House forms, arranging payments, researching, sending out documents for e-signature, and creating Completion Bibles containing signed and dated documents from a transaction, for a variety of different matters, from acquisitions to restructures. This morning, I’m met with a long list of ancillary documents to draft for a large-scale group restructure, from board minutes to Companies House forms.
It doesn’t take long for another task to fall in my lap regarding a matter where the holder of the shares passed away before transferring them. I research what the possible next steps are, with helpful advice from the Private Client team. A quick call from a client comes through to verify their ID documents, before I continue.
Today is my lucky day, as there is a 0-5 year Post-Qualified Experience (PQE) Corporate training session. Each session is hosted by a different partner in the firm about a chosen area of expertise, and as expected, I thoroughly enjoy the enlightening and informative training.
Throughout the day, I also monitor the Incorporations email inbox . A request for an urgent same-day incorporation has been received, which I complete before the deadline using our dedicated incorporation agent. Before I know it, it’s already lunchtime! I head down to the building gym for a quick workout before taking my pick for lunch.
It’s not all work and no play! After lunch, I make my way to the head of office for a quick chat about an upcoming get-together for the Birmingham office. As the ‘Department of Fun’ representative, I am constantly researching activities and making enquiries to create a plan for the year.
My job also consists of helping the Company Secretarial team with filing confirmation statements and updating statutory registers on our dedicated software system. There are physical registers to update, so I add it to my list for tomorrow when I’m in the Worcester office.
I end the day by updating my to-do-list and excited for the Tottenham match that evening, to which I inevitably receive a series of witty (but inaccurate) remarks.
I am continuously being asked whether I’m enjoying my time at HCR, particularly in the Corporate team, and I can honestly say that I’m thoroughly relishing every single day and living the dream. As to what the future holds, unsurprisingly, I aspire to further advance my career here at HCR.
