An estimated figure of 350,000 people in Hong Kong hold British National Overseas passports which currently allow them to enter the UK without a visa for 6 months. The UK government has set draft proposals whereby the 6 month time limit to enter the UK will be removed and extended to a period of 5 years to allow British National Overseas passport holders reside in the UK to work or study. After 5 years, they could apply for settled status (indefinite leave to remain) and in future British Citizenship.

There are a further 2.5 million citizens in Hong Kong who would be eligible to apply for a British Overseas National passport. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stated that the UK will take responsibility in protecting these rights for the individuals concerned and they also therefore appear to be able to benefit from the proposed UK changes.
