Daniel Goodall

Partner, Intellectual Property & Interactive Entertainment

Why choose me

I enjoy helping clients identify, protect, exploit and defend their intellectual property (IP), whether it be their brand, an invention, one or more creative works, software, trade secrets or any other valuable intangible asset.

Within the interactive entertainment sector I help video games companies develop amazing games within an increasingly challenging commercial and regulatory environment. This may include game development and publishing agreements, the use of AI or open source software in game development, or regulatory matters from online safety and digital fairness to advertising and in-game monetisation.

Before joining HCR, I worked in-house as general counsel for a UK-based mobile, PC and console games publisher. Having spent more than two years in a senior in-house role, I understand what clients need from external advisers and strive to provide that level of practical, commercial support.

Prior to that I spent over 12 years with a large national firm advising on all areas of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property law. From clearance advice and strategic portfolio management through licensing and exploitation to enforcement and dispute resolution, I have assisted clients with a wide range of trade mark, copyright, designs, patents and confidential information matters.

As the pace of innovation continues to move quickly, the law often has to catch up; I help clients navigate this landscape and find solutions that align with their wider goals.

Building meaningful relationships is important to me and I take the time to understand my clients’ businesses, priorities and pressures. Responsiveness is key and I work proactively, anticipating issues early and communicating clearly and succinctly.

Outside work, I enjoy spending time with my family and travelling to experience new places and cultures.

Questions my clients ask me

Registering a trade mark will always provide stronger protection than relying on unregistered rights, but trade marks are territorial and come with a cost – so the question should always be answered in the context of your wider trade mark strategy.

We can help you work with the various platforms to address infringing games quickly and efficiently.

We can help you work through your online safety and child safety risk assessments to identify key risks and how they can be moderated in order to protect your players from online harms.
