Partner (FCILEx)

Why choose me

I help farming families protect and pass on their assets to the next generation in the most tax-efficient way possible, often supporting them through some of life’s most challenging circumstances, including the loss or incapacity of a loved one.

Tax and succession planning can often seem complex, but I enjoy helping clients make sense of that complexity and finding solutions that work for their individual circumstances. No two farming families are the same, so my advice is always tailored to their specific needs and objectives.

I advise a broad range of clients, from small family farms to large landed estates, as well as business owners and high net worth individuals. My work includes wills, inheritance tax planning, succession planning, lasting powers of attorney, estate administration and trusts.

I’m a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and a Fellow of the Agricultural Law Association (ALA).

I take a compassionate and practical approach, putting myself in my clients’ shoes and taking the time to understand what matters most to them. I provide clear, straightforward advice that’s easy to understand, even when dealing with complex issues.

I’m never afraid to tackle difficult questions or challenging circumstances to help clients achieve the right outcome for themselves, their families and their businesses.

Outside work, much of my time revolves around my children’s hobbies. My daughter has horses and my son enjoys mountain biking, so you’ll often find us out riding or cycling in the woods. I’m also a great believer in the benefits of spending time outdoors.

Questions my clients ask me

This will depend on the assets available and the structure in which they’re held. It’s also important to remember that fair doesn’t necessarily mean equal. Every family’s circumstances are different, and the best approach will depend on your wider family, business and succession objectives.

In most cases, this is unlikely to achieve the desired outcome. Your home provides security and stability and transferring it during your lifetime can create risks. It may also be treated as a deliberate deprivation of assets for care fee assessments. Depending on your circumstances, there may be other options available, and it’s important to take advice before making any decisions.

Good succession planning and appropriate structures can help reduce inheritance tax exposure. However, tax shouldn’t be the tail that wags the dog. Any planning needs to work for you, your family and your business, rather than focusing on tax considerations alone.
