Partner, Planning, Highways & Environment

Why choose me

As a planning and environment specialist, I help clients secure – and defend – planning permission. My work combines strategic insight and hands-on detail to deliver outcomes that lead to real places being built.

I studied planning and environmental law at university and found it came alive when I got into practice. Every matter involves real‑world issues and produces tangible results. Engineering, viability, ecology, heritage and politics all play a part, and planning law evolves constantly, so there’s always a new angle to explore.

The variety is one of the best parts of my role. Clients range from listed developers to family businesses, so I might be advising on a £1bn regeneration scheme one day and helping a private individual with enforcement the next. I could be negotiating a planning agreement in a council office, appearing at a planning committee meeting, hearing or public inquiry, or supporting a high net worth client with a listed building issue.

Clients value my experience, energy and focus on results. Clear communication and sound judgement shape my approach, along with a collaborative attitude and sense of humour.

Outside work, you’ll find me cheering on Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens. I’m a family man and enjoy long road trips.

Questions my clients ask me

Planning consultants prepare planning applications and write the supporting documents. Planning lawyers focus on avoiding legal issues, marshalling arguments, advising on process and procedure, developing strategy, instructing counsel, running appeals, drafting planning obligations, carrying out due diligence and working with property lawyers to document deals.

Not usually. I sometimes act on very large dwellings, but most of my work is medium to large scale – or involves a complex issue – rather than simply resolving a neighbour’s objection.

It can feel that way. We’re facing a housing crisis, low levels of construction, controversy around major schemes and slow progress on climate and biodiversity goals. The system isn’t easy to navigate, but that’s where experienced professionals can help.
