Sophie Key

Senior Associate

Why choose me

Family and relationship breakdown impacts many people, and I was drawn to a legal career that allows me to support those going through this difficult time in their lives. Part of my role is to alleviate the emotional stress from the legal process, providing clarity and guidance during what is often a challenging time. I help my clients navigate the process, ensuring they are clear on what the outcomes are likely to be.

My expertise includes divorce and dissolution matters, finances on divorce, and pre- and post-nuptial agreements. I advise and represent clients in relation to arrangements for children, including international relocation, and also advise grandparents. I offer advice and representation in relation to injunctions, including non-molestation and occupation orders, where clients are at risk from domestic abuse. I also prepare separation agreements and cohabitation agreements.

I represent an array of clients, from those with modest assets seeking guidance to achieve a financial ‘clean break’ to high net worth individuals with complex business structures.

Outside of work, I enjoy holidaying with my family, cooking for family and friends and going to comedy gigs.

Questions my clients ask me

Possibly. This will depend on the overall assets and resources, including each party’s borrowing capacity in the form of a mortgage, the length of your marriage, the age of your children and the housing needs of the family. If it’s not possible to retain the home outright, it may be possible to defer buying out your spouse or selling the property.

No, a spouse’s behaviour must be so serious that it would be unfair for a court to ignore it. The court does not consider one party’s adultery to be serious – so it will not impact on the division on finances.

No, the law is not biased towards mothers. The law recognises the importance of both parents to a child. If parents cannot agree the arrangements for their child, the court will consider all the circumstances including the capability of each parent and, where appropriate, the child’s wishes and feelings.
