Spotlight on… Penny-jo Wilson

25th January 2023

This week, we introduce you to Penny-jo Wilson, Senior Associate in our Family Law team. Penny-jo tells us about her most memorable legal experience and how her love of meeting new people and listening to their stories led her to a career in law.

What first attracted you to a career in law?

I love meeting new people and listening to their stories about their lives. I have always wanted to help people when they are in difficulty and I take a holistic approach to resolving conflict, always considering all the circumstances.

This led me to Family Law and being passionate about helping and guiding people through emotionally challenging times in their lives.

What type of legal advice do you provide and to what sort of clients?

Family Law advice. Mostly in relation to disputes regarding children. My clients are often parents with concerns for their child’s wellbeing in relation to the care afforded to them by the other parent or parents that are seeking for a child to live with them or spend time with them.

What is your most memorable legal experience and why?

Working with a QC in the High Court on a case where the court had to decide whether the baby’s mother had drugged and smothered her baby. Luckily the baby was fine but did not return to live with the mother. It was fascinating and shocking in equal measures!

What is your number one top tip for clients?

Managing difficult situations when your child is concerned is likely to trigger strong emotions and feelings. It’s therefore really important that you seek advice from a specialist children solicitor before making any decisions or taking any action to ensure that the steps taken are going to be in yours and the child/children’s best interests.
