HCR Law’s Thames Valley office is continuing its charity partnership with Royal Berks Charity for a second year. The relationship began after one of the firm’s partners and her family experienced the care provided by the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
In May 2020, Andy Woollatt was admitted to ICU following a serious cycling accident that left him with a brain injury, multiple fractures and a spinal cord injury, arriving with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of three – the lowest possible score, indicating deep coma.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions at the time, his wife Tahlia, a Partner in HCR Law’s Real Estate Disputes team, could only visit him briefly each day, spending long hours in the ICU family room waiting for updates. She later described it as an incredibly difficult and isolating period and spoke about how important it was to have a quiet, supportive space close by.
Andy survived thanks to the expertise and dedication of the ICU team and continues to make progress in his recovery. The experience had a lasting impact on Tahlia, Andy and colleagues at HCR Law’s Thames Valley office, who chose to support Royal Berks Charity in recognition of the care he received.
Funds raised during the first year of the partnership will help towards improving the ICU overnight room – a space that allows families to stay close to loved ones at the end of life or during critical moments, offering somewhere to rest, recharge and gather their thoughts.
The Thames Valley team will continue its support into a second year, with staff once again taking on Tough Mudder and other fundraising activities. These efforts will help patients and their families across the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
Lewis Djemal, Partner and Head of HCR Law’s Thames Valley office, said: “When Tahlia shared her story with us last year, we felt it was a very worthwhile cause. It’s great to renew our commitment for a second year.”
Joanne Somner, Corporate Partnerships Manager at Royal Berks Charity said: “We’re incredibly grateful that HCR Law has chosen to continue this partnership and I want to thank them for all their hard work fundraising for us last year. It began with one family’s experience, but it has grown into a shared commitment to supporting everyone who comes through our hospital doors. Partnerships like this make a real difference.”
Through the HCR Law Charitable Trust, staff across the firm’s 13 offices raise money throughout the year for charities that meet real local community needs. Over the past 30 years, the firm has raised more than £2m, thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment of its employees.
Funds raised this year will contribute to Royal Berks Charity’s 30th Anniversary Equipment Appeal, helping to provide equipment that enhances patient care, improves clinical spaces and supports families during challenging times.
