On 20 September 2026, the Chariots of Fire relay returns, opening parts of Cambridge usually closed to the public through a route shaped by the city’s history.
The 1.7-mile course starts on Queen’s Green and runs through the centre of Cambridge, passing through Trinity College and King’s College. Both institutions have played a role in shaping ideas that changed the world, with more than 40 Nobel laureates between them.
The route moves through spaces that are rarely accessible, taking runners across college courts, walkways and riverside paths. Crossing Trinity’s Great Court – associated with the Chariots of Fire film – is one of the event’s defining moments.
From there, the course continues along Garret Hostel Lane into the grounds of King’s College. Runners follow the River Cam along the Backs, with views across the college lawns and King’s College Chapel along the way.
The final stage returns to Queen’s Green, where the baton is passed between teammates. The relay format keeps the focus on both individual effort and team performance.
This year, participants are raising funds for the British Heart Foundation, supporting research into heart and circulatory diseases.
HCR Charity Trustee, Colin Jones, said: “Taking part in Chariots of Fire is a truly special experience. To run through these iconic spaces, while raising funds for such an important cause, is something that stays with you long after race day. We’d encourage as many teams as possible to get involved.”
For those entering the college category, there’s also an added competitive element, with the intercollegiate cup – won in 2025 by Jesus College – up for grabs.
Whether you’re returning for another year or taking part for the first time, Chariots of Fire offers a way to experience Cambridge’s history as part of a shared challenge.
