How did your trust perform last academic year?

As we start a new academic year, it’s an ideal time to reflect on your trust’s growth and transformation over the past twelve months.

Have there been any missed opportunities to develop or improve? Now might be the perfect moment to take action, refine your approach, and ensure you’re making the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.

MAT growth: What’s happening?

Despite last year’s change in government, the expansion of multi-academy trusts (MATs) has continued, with growth primarily driven by mergers. These mergers happen either between existing MATs or with schools that currently operate as single academy trusts.

Why are smaller trusts merging?

Mergers between smaller trusts are taking place for several key reasons:

  • To gain financial stability and better manage resources
  • To access enhanced central support services and back-office efficiencies
  • To benefit from stronger school improvement programs that can raise standards across the board.

Interestingly, while the government has shown less enthusiasm for the universal roll out of the academy programme and ended conversion grants, many maintained schools are still choosing to convert. Shrinking local authority support and leadership changes are key drivers for these schools, making the transition into MATs increasingly appealing.

For trusts that demonstrate strong school improvement results and can integrate new schools effectively, the potential for growth remains high. A smooth merger can lead to better outcomes for all parties involved, from students to staff.

Early Years and special educational needs (SEN)

In addition to adding new schools, many MATs are expanding their services in other important areas:

  • Early Years: The Department for Education (DfE) has launched the second phase of its school-based nursery programme. Primary schools can apply for up to £150,000 to open or expand on-site nurseries. This funding not only helps increase pupil numbers but also supports long-term sustainability, making it an attractive option for growing MATs.
  • SEN: The demand for specialist support continues to rise, with more trusts setting up specialist resource provisions and independent facilities through subsidiary companies to meet local needs. These facilities play a crucial role in supporting students with complex needs and contribute to the overall success and reputation of the MAT.
