Energy and Utilities

Energy powers our lives. Whether working or playing, the need for energy is constant.

Our team of expert energy lawyers have decades of experience advising businesses around the world who provide energy, and the infrastructure to transmit that energy to where it needs to be, whether renewable or traditional.

Our expertise

We’ve advised a range of businesses across the globe on energy and utilities – from oil, gas, telecoms and water to solar and wind – making sure that their contracts are in good shape, they can secure funding when they need it most, and that they get the right advice when dealing with regulators. It’s our job to advise throughout a project lifecycle and help you reach your ambitions. Should you face disputes, we’ll be on-hand to help you navigate them.

Our team is brought in to assist with litigation avoidance in drafting as well as in large disputes between energy suppliers and companies or other energy suppliers. Their broad depth of understanding and experience in such matters means they advise across supply agreements, failure to deliver services and debt collection and disputes between intermediary suppliers or companies.

We also have deep experience in the telecoms sector – notably working with mobile phone operators and infrastructure providers, both in-house and in private practice, providing advice on both contentious and non-contentious issues concerning equipment on land and property. Alongside this, we have advised on the implications of the old and new Telecommunications Code 1984 and Electronics Communications Code 2017, supply chain issues, and renewal and access issues.

Cross-border infrastructure

Members of our team have worked alongside lenders on infrastructure work for terminals in the Middle East, and secured equity and project finance for some of the largest oil and gas projects ever carried out in Bahrain and the wider region.

Closer to home, we’ve provided leading legal advice to household name utilities in the energy, water and telecoms industries. This has included advising on contracts, rights when it comes to regulatory rules and frameworks, entry into private land, cross-border work and litigation. Members of the team have also provided training on procurement law and data protection.

We’ve also worked on mergers and acquisitions of major energy providers, acting for both buyers and sellers, and advised on joint venture agreements, refinancing and emissions reductions purchase agreements, as well as power purchase agreements. Drafting key contracts and implementing asset and share purchase agreements has meant clients in both the traditional and renewable energy spaces have had smooth transitions, both on buy and sell sides.

Working with you for a sustainable future

The energy and utilities sector presents a myriad of opportunities for innovative businesses – but it also presents a number of risks. Being able to balance consumer demand with sustainability is one of the great challenges facing all businesses today – but none more so than those in the energy and utilities sector.

If you’re looking to find renewable solutions to traditional methods, we can help you make sure that you choose the best option for your business and your customers.

Rebecca’s HE expertise has been invaluable, as has the expertise of her colleagues in other legal specialisms. We appreciate the commercial approach of ‘our’ UniFlex team – their ability to see things from our perspective rather than from a purely legal standpoint has been very important.

I also appreciate the flexibility and responsiveness of the service. Our arrangement is for a set number of hours a week, but they aren’t on a particular day. It means we can reach out at short notice and there are no bottlenecks in turning matters around.
