HCR Hewitsons and Northamptonshire Sport partner for local Business Games

22nd March 2023

Award winning top 60 law firm, HCR Hewitsons and health, wellbeing and physical activity charity Northamptonshire Sport have partnered to hold a local business event with a twist this summer on 22 June.

The HCR Hewitsons Business Games 2023 will see 20 teams compete in an evening of action-packed sports, from volleyball, archery and bowls to less conventional activities like hobby horse show jumping, as part of a programme of initiatives aimed at promoting improvements in health and wellbeing in a fun way, for those working in local and regional businesses.

The HCR Hewitsons games are modelled on Northamptonshire Sport’s successful annual Business Games event but will be held in association with the University of Northampton, at their sports facilities on their Waterside Campus in the proposed new ‘Active Quarter’ of Northampton.

HCR Hewitsons has recently invested in new, modern offices and a larger team based in one central legal hub at Lancaster House, on the same site as the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus, in the heart of a thriving innovative community and also, in the new proposed ‘Active Quarter’.

Although still in the early stages, the ‘Active Quarter’ vision is to create an area in the southwest of Northampton to encompass the connected spaces of Midsummer Meadow, Beckets Park, Delapré Abbey, Delapré Park Golf Centre, Northampton Bike Park and the neighbouring Pocket Parks. Covering around 900 hectares the new Active Quarter will use and transform existing green and urban spaces and nearby waterways to help improve people’s health and wellbeing.

Northamptonshire Sport is leading on the Active Quarter and is working with local partners on the project including the University of Northampton (UON), WNC, Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust, Brackmills Business Improvement District (BID), West Northants Public Health and British Cycling. Northamptonshire Sport believes that partnerships with the local business community is key to creating a thriving and sustainable space; the Business Games partnership with HCR Hewitsons is a great example of this.

Dominic Hopkins, who shares the leadership of the HCR Hewitsons Central England office with Partner, Charlotte Thornton-Smith, said:

“We have a passion for people and the HCR Hewitsons Business Games echoes that sentiment – bringing together our people and local business representatives to have some friendly sporty competition is a great way for us to unwind and socialise, and of course enjoy the on-campus facilities. We’re very much looking forward to it.”

Gabrielle Deere, Strategic Director – Business Development & Commercial, said:

“It’s great to be working with the team at HCR Hewitsons to put on a fun evening of activities. As we know playing together is the best way to get to know people, engage employees or reconnect which plays a vital part of people’s wellbeing. The games ensure that everyone can take part and you don’t have to be sporty and there is no competitive advantage. Believe me, very few are experts in hobby horse show jumping!”
