Client Story

Resolving succession problems of farming estate and businesses

14th April 2023

Our client’s farm has been passed down through the family for many years and preserving and protecting this legacy for future generations is key. Achieving this, however, is complex.

Kerri Woodrow, Private Client Partner in our Central England office, is assisting her client with farm succession planning, drawing in cross-sector expertise from our Agriculture, Corporate and Family Law teams.

From dealing with property aspects and third-party lenders, partnership agreements and company incorporation, inheritance tax and capital gains tax planning, use of wills and trusts, and advising on matrimonial and other family issues, this matter required careful balancing of competing factors and a breadth of expertise.

Beth King-Smith, Head of Disputed Wills, Trusts and Estates, has also brought her knowledge and experience to the matter, to try to ensure that all members of the family are treated fairly and that disputes further down the line are avoided.

Our Private Wealth team is working closely with other teams across the firm, as well as accountants and tax advisors, to achieve the client’s objectives, significantly improve the tax position, but also preserve family relationships.
