HCR Law’s continued growth and investment in specialist expertise has been recognised in the Legal 500 2027 rankings, with new rankings, tier improvements and individual recognitions recorded across England and Wales.
The Legal 500 is a globally respected directory for legal services, based on independent research among clients and professional peers.
In this year’s rankings, HCR Law achieved a record 81 firmwide rankings and 82 individual lawyer rankings. The firm secured 12 first-time rankings across a diverse range of specialist practice areas and locations, while 10 practice areas improved their tier positions compared with the 2026 results.
Twenty practice areas are ranked in Tier 1, up from 18 last year, alongside four ‘Firms to watch’ rankings and continued recognition for individual lawyers through Hall of Fame, Leading Partner, Next Generation Partner and Leading Associate rankings.
In the West Midlands and Birmingham areas, five practice areas are ranked for the first time. These include a Tier 3 ranking for Social housing, reflecting significant growth in the practice, and a Tier 2 ranking for Agriculture and Estates, with Alex Robinson recognised as a Leading Partner. Commercial property also climbed two tiers, moving from Tier 4 to Tier 2.
The results follow the integration of Wright Hassall in November 2025, which established HCR Law’s Leamington Spa office and further strengthened the firm’s Midlands presence.
The firm’s Corporate and Commercial practice continues to be recognised across every region where HCR Law has an office, including a new ranking in Birmingham and progression to Tier 1 rankings in both the South West and East Midlands. Over the past year, HCR has maintained its position as the UK’s most active legal adviser for M&A activity according to Experian MarketIQ, and these latest rankings reflect that continued success.
HCR’s continued investment in East Anglia is also reflected in a new Tier 2 ranking for Contentious trusts and probate. In Norwich, Corporate and commercial entered the rankings at Tier 3, while Commercial property earned a ‘Firms to watch’ ranking. The results build on a year of significant growth for the Norwich office, which relocated to larger premises in July 2026 and has grown to seven partners since opening last year.
The office’s growth is also reflected in individual recognition, with Head of Norwich Office Frank Brumby retaining his Hall of Fame status and Head of Family, East Anglia, Amy Walpole recognised as a Leading Partner. Elsewhere in the region, Head of Cambridge Office Natalie Minott retained her Leading Partner recognition in Property litigation.
HCR’s London office secured new ‘Firms to watch’ rankings for Commercial contracts and Immigration: business, while the South East earned a first-time ranking for Banking and finance. These results build on the firm’s growing presence in both markets and strengthen recognition across its full-service offering.
Our Welsh office in Cardiff achieved improved rankings for Commercial litigation and Personal tax, trusts and probate, both progressing to Tier 2. The Agriculture and Estates team maintained its Tier 1 ranking, while Head of Agriculture and Estates Rory Hutchings secured a place in the Hall of Fame. Commercial property in Wales also entered the directory for the first time with a Tier 4 ranking.
Across the firm, several senior leaders retained or secured individual rankings, including Hall of Fame recognitions for Head of Education Kristine Scott and Dominic Hopkins, Joint Head of Northampton Office, and Leading Partner rankings for Rachael Reeves and Rachel Turner, who head up the South West and Thames Valley Corporate teams respectively.
Rod Thomas, Managing Partner, said: “These results reflect the trust our clients place in us and the dedication of colleagues across the firm. Over the past year, we’ve continued to invest in our people, our offices and our specialist expertise, while expanding our presence in key regions.
“Securing 12 new rankings and 10 ranking improvements demonstrates the strength of our full-service offering and the quality of advice we provide to clients across England and Wales. As we continue to grow, we’re committed to building on this success and delivering exceptional outcomes for our clients.”
Alongside the team rankings, HCR received more than 200 individual lawyer mentions, including 43 Leading Partners. The directory also recognises 14 Leading Associates, 18 Next Generation Partners and seven colleagues listed in the Hall of Fame.
