Partner, Head of Agriculture and Estates Team
Working with clients whose business is often inextricable from their family lives, I know how important it is to truly understand how they and their business works so that I can give them the practical and strategic advice they need.
As a farmer’s son who grew up on a dairy farm in Herefordshire, agricultural and rural business law has always been a passion of mine. Specialising in this area allows me to remain working with and supporting an industry I know, and which is of fundamental importance.
Protecting your property and your legal position
We support farming families, farming businesses, country estates, trustees, private landowners and conservation and landowning charities on all aspects of agricultural tenancies.
Our experience covers preparing business tenancies for the different use of farm buildings and farmland and buildings for agriculture along with residential tenancies and agreements for holiday lets. We also draft leases for the working of mines and minerals, advise on Agricultural Holdings Act (AHA) tenancies, prepare agreements for the letting of sporting rights such as shooting and fishing, and drafting and serving tenancy notices – including notices to quit.
Advice you can trust
Our team advise on the best course of action open when a landlord or tenant is in default, and have experience advising on Stamp Duty Land Tax, including the wider considerations for the farming business to ensure you retain the strongest possible financial position.
We work alongside advisors including accountants, surveyors and land agents. We can also draw on the knowledge of our colleagues across the rest of the business when it’s appropriate. Together, we form a proactive team of experts dedicated to supporting your tenancy requirements.
